I remember when I was still studying up until college, all the people around me kept on telling me to study well and get a good grade so I can land on a high paying job that would make me rich.
Well, I thought it was actually a good advise and I wanted to make lots of money at that time so I can buy the things that I want. But I had no idea what kind of high paying job would make me rich. I just thought whatever they say might be true, just study well and get good grades in school.
When I entered college, I had no idea which school to go to or what course is? I literally didn’t know what finding a college course means, let alone what course I should take. I listened to what my Aunts told me, take up accountancy so I can get a full scholarship from Metrobank and be a CPA who would get paid really high for my services as an accountant.
I did took the course Accountancy and took an entrance exam at FEU and I did get the scholarship from Metrobank. But during my third year in college, I knew and I felt it in my heart that I don’t want to be an accountant, instead, I wanted to do marketing. I fell in love with the subjects of Marketing and on my fourth year, even if my Metrobank scholarship will be forfeited if I switch to another course, I pursued what I wanted to do.
After graduating from college, I found myself hopping from different kinds of work. When I tried working in the call center industry, as far as I can remember, I keep moving from one call center to another in a period of 2 to4 months. I don’t like routinary jobs doing same thing over and over again. I thought I was looking for the right corporate account that I could stick to, then I thought I was looking for the right company, or maybe the right group of people working in the company but it was tiring, the real problem was inside me. I did not want the work itself because it defies my purpose. I was not made for the job so I could not stick to it.
Its hard to force yourself into doing something when you know that you are merely doing it to get paid. The people around me would often say that I am being impractical for not being careful about my decisions when it comes to my choice of work.
I would often hear my mother say to find a job that pays you well and stick to it even if you are not happy or you don’t like it because you need to earn in order for you to live and support your family.
Is it really the case for everyone else?
Just because every other people you know who are working has the “paycheck mentality” of working just to get paid means you should be doing the same.
This is the case from traditional work positions, the requirements of the job are frequently imposed on you, regardless of your passions, calling or unique skills.
Does your work allow you to make the best use of your abilities, your personality traits, your values and dreams?
If you are looking for a life that has purpose and meaning and if you are committed to have it in your life, even your work should be more than a tool to make money. Your work should be a primary application of our purpose here on earth.
“For we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
You can shift from viewing your work as something that serves not only our own needs but a calling that enables us to serve others, share God’s love and activate a chain of miracles.
The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For? ( Expanded Edition) book by Rick Warren has helped me a lot in learning that I was actually created by God for a purpose and it should be my goal to seek God for his purpose in me so that I could fulfil it.
Another book, No More Dreaded Mondays: Ignite Your Passion – and Other Revolutionary Ways to Discover Your True Calling at Work by Dan Miller can also help you discover your true calling at work and how you can ignite the passion within you to work according to God’s purpose for your life.
Fast forward today, I still love Marketing and I firmly believe that I do have a calling in this industry and this is where God wants me to be. There were so many times that I have tried searching for the right work for me to earn really big amount of money but God is so good that He has guided me into letting me know my calling.
I have loved writing ever since I cannot remember and I love to share my thoughts, ideas to others who need it. I also love to talk and counsel people whom I can relate well from my own experiences and as long as God allows me to share any wisdom coming from Him to people who asks for advises about life, marriage, parenting, career, business or marketing strategies. These are the skills that I believe God has given me that gives me a sense of purpose as I am able to carry out God’s work in these skills.
