As parents, how do we deal with our children when we have issues with them that needs to be settled?
There are times when my children wants something and they have to ask permission from us and as parents, we both have to be in one with our decision.
They would often ask us if they could buy a certain toy or if they could go swimming or eat at Jollibee. Small decisions or big decisions that needs answer from us to lead our children into obedience to what our final decision would be.
But sometimes I would find myself telling my kids to ask their father as he should have the final say and then when they ask him, he would point it back to me so our kids go back to me asking for my final decision.
This is how we were when we have not fully embraced the teachings of God on how to deal with our children’s concern biblically. Teaching our children to obey is hard when you our teachings are not rooted from the word of God.
As we started learning how to handle our children’s concerns rooted from a biblical solution, we had to commit that when making decisions, we should be on one page.
There is a saying that “When we work, we work, but when we pray, God works.”
One important lesson that we have to teach our children is for them to be grounded in the word of God. This truth from the verse that says “Children, obey your parents in the Lord for this is right. Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise) so that it may go well with you…” Ephesians 6:1-2
Children must believe the biblical principle that with obedience to parents comes blessings because ultimately obedience to parents is obedience to Him.
Another important lesson that I have learned as well is to teach our children to pray for what they want and if it is God’s will to give t to them, then they will have it. In this way, they practice their faith through prayer and they learn that God’s will be done on the desires of their heart. And when their prayers are answered, their faith grows as well.
And when we tell them to learn to wait for God’s answer to their prayers, they also learn to wait for God’s time in answering their prayers and once it gets answered, they learn to become thankful for God’s faithfulness.
This is one decision that in our marriage has been important, that we seek God first before giving any decisions to our kids and that we both agree to the decision we make as we believe it is the will of God and not ours only.
