What do you do when your husband keeps breaking his promises?
Promises are meant to be broken.
I grew up hearing this and I almost believed that most people, if not all of them, will break their promises.
After all, no one is perfect to be faithful and consistent when it comes to their promises.
Well, I know how it feels to break promises even to the people I love dearly.
But I also know how it feels when someone you love break his promises to you over and over.
So I have experienced both, breaking my own promise and being left with a broken promise.
I remember how angry I would feel whenever my husband breaks his promises to me. I would freak out, nag at him non-stop, yell at him and make sure that he sees how disappointed, mad and hurt I was for not keeping his promises to me.
We would end up arguing as he tries to defend himself for not being able to keep his promises and I would never listen to whatever he says because during those moments, I was so full of pride, I was selfish and I was thinking only about myself.
I had no room for understanding that my husband is just like me, who is not perfect and will stumble from time to time. I had this crazy thought that for sure, my husband doesn’t really love me because if he does, then he shouldn’t be breaking his promises because he knows that it will hurt me and it will break the trust that I have given him.
But all these has changed when I accepted Jesus Christ’s love for me and I started to have a personal relationship with God. I learned that I can trust God and that He will never break His promises because He is faithful.
I learned how to forgive my husband from all the broken promises that caused me so much pain because I finally understood what forgiveness is.
How can I not learn to forgive when I have been forgiven from my sins through the blood of Jesus Christ on the cross?
I now feel secure with God’s promises and learned to trust God in everything in my life. This security overcomes the insecurities, doubts and fears that I might feel if my husband breaks his promises again.
Yes, my husband still breaks some of his promises to me, but by the grace of God and how God is changing my heart, I am able to lift it all up to Him who is faithful with His promises to me and who gives me the reassurance with this promise:
I sincerely believe that my husband was given to me by God and if I trust God, then I should also trust Him that He will work in my husband’s heart to be the husband that He wants him to be and that includes transforming my husband to be committed and consistent with his promises, not just to me but to our family.
