I heard this book from a friend who has been reading it and she said that she was so hooked into it and so she told me to read it as well. But I had no time at that time to even research about the book to know what its all about. I love reading but I tend to read more books about self-development, psychological and spiritual books. I was not yet a true born again Christian at that time. I was a Christian but I could not say I was born again as oppose to what I feel now being born again from my old self.
Then a movie of the book, Fifty Shades Of Grey was released here in the Philippines. I was seeing the excitement of almost every women in my facebook news feed and I somehow got intrigued by it. I watched the trailer in you tube and I thought maybe I could ask my husband for us to watch it and see what the movie is like.
I asked my husband if we could watch it and he agreed without really knowing what the movie was all about. We set the date and I was looking forward to it to be honest.
I tried to search the internet to see if I could watch it online. But to no avail and I felt God telling me dont even try because you will never find any copy if it.
Then there was an inner conviction within me asking if watching the movie a way of a Christian? Was there anything good in the movie that would feed my soul and is something that God would approve?
Ever since I surrendered my life to God and accepted Jesus Christ in my life as my Lord and Saviour, His Holy Spirit has always been guiding me to think about almost everything that I do if its according to the ways of the Lord. Not by my own effort, it was the Holy Spirit nudging me to find out and learn what God says about certain things that I want to do in my life. After all, the Bible is the manual of how to live our life and anything that God says that is not according to His ways would upset Him. Knowing the Lord and loving Him with all my heart and soul, I don’t want to upset Him further for I know everyday I commit sins even in small things that I do and say.
So when my husband asked me if I still wanted to watch the movie as it has been two days since we agreed on the date for us to watch it, I said no. I told Him that I felt God was telling me that there was no godly reasons for me to watch the movie at all. There are many ungodly reasons though for me not to watch the movie.
But the sinful desire in me kept creeping up after the movie has finished being shown in cinemas. I asked my husband if we can just buy a DVD copy and watch it at home. God must be thinking how persistent I am to give in to my sinful desire of watching the movie. But thanks to the Holy Spirit of God, I have never and will never watch the movie or even read the book.
Weeks passed and I forgot about the movie. And just this morning, I saw this on you tube while watching another video from 700 Club Interactive:
“So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” 2 Timothy 2:22
For Christians in some cases we are to stand and fight. In some cases we are to reason, engage, and refute. And in some cases we are to get out as quickly as possible. I believe that Fifty Shades of Grey is in this third category. For me, and I believe for the vast majority of believers, there is nothing to gain and a lot to lose by watching or reading Fifty Shades of Grey. By Mark King (Fifty Shades No Grey Area)
Right now Fifty Shades of Grey is just fun, dirty reading for many people, but it’s possible that for many others, Fifty Shades of Grey is, or will become, a frightening reality. We need to be ready to respond to the potential repercussions of this culture shift — not just in a reactionary way, but in a biblically sound and compassionate manner.
